Our small class sizes allow for a considerable amount of individual attention, and each application for a place at the BJAB is considered carefully. We are keen to ensure that we are able to cater effectively for each child’s needs, in order that they will benefit from the educational programme we offer.
Many of our class teachers have experience in supporting a range of educational needs. Work in class is differentiated to meet the needs of individuals or small groups; differentiation may be in response to those who have a different style of learning or for those who may have a special gift or talent. Wherever possible the planning of the curriculum will aim to meet the individual needs of the pupils.
A Learning Support (LS) teacher is responsible for liaising with the class teacher to assess any identified needs; an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is raised to support the specific learning programme. We liaise with parents to share the IEP and thereby target strategies for support.
Some pupils may receive learning support within class and this may be provided by a Teaching Assistant or the LS teacher; in some cases a pupil may be withdrawn for 1:1 lessons.
Should it be determined that a pupil needs further support beyond that available in school, specialist intervention may be sought; part of the application process advises on this commitment by parents.
Pupils learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) receive dedicated support to allow them to access the curriculum as quickly as possible. Depending upon their individual needs they may receive additional support in the classroom or they may be withdrawn for 1:1 support.
For those pupils transferring from different systems (who enter a class without English and without the appropriate learning skills) parents will be advised whether additional tutoring will be required.
