During the autumn term the children will begin to learn some mathematical terms including total, sum of, equals, is the same as, plus, greater than, bigger, difference. They will revise the numbers to 10 and learn the number names to 20. The class will practise counting to 20 both forwards and backwards in ones and twos. The children will learn the number bonds to 10 and will use these facts to help them to solve numerical problems. We will look at time and concentrate on learning the days of the week, months of the year, the seasons and the hours. Year 1 will be introduced to the vocabulary of length and height and begin measuring using both standard and non standard units. The children will look at 2D shapes and their properties. They will begin ‘data handling’ and will draw their own block graphs. We will look at money focussing on coin recognition up to 50p/£1.
In Year 1 we will continue to use the Oxford Reading Tree as the principal reading scheme. Individual reading, with an adult, will take place on four mornings a week and the class will also read in small groups. The children should read at home each evening.
Initially, we will revise skills learned in the reception class including letter names and sounds. We will look at CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) and build up a word bank of these. Time will also be spent on recognising rhyming words and understanding why these words rhyme. The class will practise putting both letters and words into alphabetical order. We will revise the high frequency words learned in the Reception class and will move on to read, write and spell the high frequency words appropriate for years 1 and 2. Time will also be spent on learning to read and write number names, the days of the week, colours and months. Every week the children will be given a list of words to practise reading, writing and spelling.
Much work will be done throughout the school year on the construction and grammar of sentences. The children will learn that all sentences must begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. They will be encouraged to write in simple sentences. Time will also be spent on comprehension work where the children will select information from a text to answer simple questions.
Our topics this term are ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Materials’. In the topic ‘Ourselves’ the class will identify different body parts and locate these on their own bodies. The children will study the five senses, through practical activities, and how the senses can be used to explore the world around them. They will differentiate between living and non-living things. The children will look at what living things need to stay alive. They will examine how humans and other animals grow and change. They will look at the differences and similarities in humans.
During the unit ‘Materials’ the children will learn about the characteristics and uses of a range of common materials together with the vocabulary for describing and comparing materials. They will learn the names of certain materials and words to describe them such as transparent, rough, and flexible. They will discover that materials are chosen for specific purposes on the basis of their properties. In addition they will test a variety of materials to find the most suitable for a particular purpose.
Our topic this term will be ‘Toys’ and we will be looking especially at the differences between toys today and those in the past. We will compare childhood now and with that of our parents and grandparents. The children will look at the concept of ‘old’ and ‘new’ and will learn how to communicate what they know about old and new toys through talk, play, role play and writing. Where possible we will link this work to our science topic ‘Materials’.
The children’s work in this area will be linked to other curriculum subjects including Science and Topic. Children will make portraits of themselves and each other using pastels/chalks and paint. They will look at different ways of using paint.
The class will make puppets, ‘Funnybones’ skeletons and moving toys from recycled materials. Year 1 will make play dough and toys using the play dough; they will be also learn how to use both fabrics and paper during weaving.
The children will begin to learn how to use the computer. They will begin by learning how to switch the computer on and off, how to log on and how to save their work. Year 1 will then go on to learn how to use the ‘paint’ program, match pictures to text and make bar charts and graphs. Year 1 will also learn how to use a digital camera and a CD player. In addition the class will use the interactive whiteboard on a daily basis.
